Slovenia Report

Slovenia is a small country, about the size of Wales, tucked into a mountainous corner between Austria, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. It is no longer seen as a destination just for retired people, it is now attracting anyone who is looking to escape, relax, enjoy the outdoor life and explore the beautiful landscapes. Debbie visited Slovenia in September 2005 and was captivated by its originality and beauty. Read Debbie’s report to find out more or call her on 0845 086 9710 or 0121 250 2211 to book your holiday.

Flight
The flight from Nottingham East Midlands Airport to Ljubljana took around 2 hours 20 minutes in a small bmi aircraft which was very comfortable.

Lake Bled
Lake Bled has stunning scenery and is an idyllic resort with a background of snow-capped mountains. The resort offers activities such as walking, horse riding, tennis and golf. Bike hire is very popular at Bled and there is an excellent bus service, which runs around the surrounding areas. Lake Bled’s beauty and peace, mild climate, fresh air, sun, and thermal water offer ideal conditions for a pleasant rest or for an active holiday.

Whilst I visited, there was a lot of renovation work going on, which they anticipate to be completed in the winter of 2005.

Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is quieter than Lake Bled although the lake is larger. The hotels are positioned around the southern side of the lake and the area is heavily wooded. I would recommend you stay half board, as there are only a handful of restaurants. Staying for two to three nights is ideal.

Kransjska Gora
Although Kransjska Gora is predominantly thought of as a winter resort it is still enjoyable during the summer months and would suit those who are looking to relax. The resort has a village centre, a large sports hall with swimming pool and a choice of restaurants. All of the four and five star hotels have excellent pools and therapy spas offering treatments of all kinds.

Toplice

I would not recommend this resort. The Slovenian Tourist Board are recommending spa breaks here, but it is used to take care of elderly hospital patients for treatments!

Ljubljana
Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana is one of Europe’s hidden gems. It is two hours from the coast and you can certainly feel the Italian, German and Hungarian influences. The picturesque city is charming and has an old market square where traders and shoppers come from miles around. There is a huge amount of history to explore including an ancient castle, baroque churches and classical public buildings. I would definitely recommend visiting Ljubljana as a city break destination for two to three nights.
slovenia Portoroz
This town has a large stretch of promenade and there are now plans to renovate hotels that have been closed for many years. It would suit you if you like modern hotels in a seafront position, the Grand Hotel Bernadin or Histrain are recommended.

Collio
Collio, near the Italian border, is a picturesque working village set high up on the hills and is an excellent location for sampling local wines. To explore Collio fully you should ideally stay for two to three days.

Piran
I loved this resort. It was absolutely charming and its abundant café life and cobbled streets make it very reminiscent of 70’s St Tropez. It is an old seaport and does not have any beaches, but you can swim off the rocks. I would recommend you stay on a bed and breakfast basis as there are so many good restaurants to try.

Summary
Slovenia makes a wonderful European holiday destination, whether it be an autumn city break, two week summer beach holiday or a scenic walking and activity break. The people are welcoming and the scenery is beautiful.
